the radiofreemidwich show episode 50
Hello comrades! Blimey, 50 eh? Seems worth noting. In lieu of a party, I’ve decided to abandon the established format and do something even more special than usual. A few weeks ago, I put out a call to artists previously featured on the show asking if they had anything unheard I could play in celebration. This could be, for example, a demo, rehearsal, out-take, or a track from an unreleased project. The original idea was to mix these in with other new stuff but so many superb tracks have been shared that I’ve put together this entire show with exclusives. I hope you enjoy this treat as much as I delighted in baking it – I’ve been knocked on my arse by the generosity and quality offered!
Here’s links to the artists’ work – show ’em some support!

The next episode of the radiofreemidwich show will be #50, which seems worth celebrating. It will also be delayed by maybe three weeks due to family stuff (don’t worry – nowt serious). The silver lining is this gives us an opportunity to make it a bit special.
If you are an artist who has been previously featured on the show and have something unheard that I could play as an exclusive then please get in touch. This can be an oddity, an off-cut or something from a planned release that won’t be out for a while. The only criteria is that it runs eight minutes or under (extracts from longer pieces are fine) and that we both really dig it. I’ll tuck some of these in amongst the new stuff.
Also, and this is open to anyone, if you’d like to record yourself saying ‘Hello comrades, and welcome to radiofreemidwich’ and/or ‘be kind to each other’ then please do (lo-fi phone recordings are fine) and I’ll use some of them too.
Contact me via email, a comment here or a DM on Twitter (@radiomidwich). Mp3 via wetransfer is my preferred method of exchange, but not insisted upon. I’ll only be online occasionally over the next few days so don’t fret if I take a moment to reply. I will, of course, be delighted to hear from you.
With love, Rob

Hello comrades! I’m guessing we could all do with a little distraction before getting back to the fight, eh? So here’s half an hour for you. The show is bookended with righteous anger but in the middle we have industrial clunk, magickal incantations, an outsider art mystery and our second reading from the wonderful Kevin Boniface.
The next episode will be #50, which is one of those landmarks that merits noting, but I haven’t decided what to do to celebrate it (suggestions welcome). Luckily, due to some family stuff it will be delayed by a couple of weeks, so I have time to mull it over. In the meantime, why not listen to old episodes you’ve missed or catch up with sister podcasts such as Anticipating Nowhere, Hide From Time, Phantom Circuit or any number of others doing the work. I’ll be back before you know it.

Hello comrades! Presenting an epic 34 minutes of kitchen fires and their dark aftermath, the corrugations on unfurling beech leaves and the swagger of ants marching across a beer garden. Get yourself a big sandwich and/or plan your stroll accordingly. Terrific line up.
Of special note is that today’s interlude is a reading by Kevin Boniface. Kevin is a writer and artist who makes his living as a postman in Huddersfield. His diaries – beautifully observed vignettes of ordinary life, presented deadpan, free of judgement – were published in a book called Round About Town by Uniform Books in 2018. I love this book, I find the writing hypnotic, poignant and frequently hilarious and when I saw Kevin tweet a link to a soundcloud recording of him reading I took a chance and sent a DM. He graciously agreed to choose and read a handful of excerpts for me to use as interludes in coming shows. Three more to look forward to.

Hello comrades! Hope all is good with you lot. This is a tight af episode, a mere 25 minutes, featuring the taste of salt liquorice, heaving viscera of uncertain purpose and adventures in spelunking. The interlude is a clip of a phone recording made whilst overexcited at being on a bus. It has been great to read some of Pete Coward’s poems over the last few weeks but I think we are done with that now. R.I.P. comrade. A new spoken word series is being arranged and, if it comes off, will be a right treat. As an added bonus, this week the boy returns to help.

Hello comrades! I hope you are well. The fresh weather and lengthening days seem to be helping with my mental posture, as is the production of this little broadcast. Hello comrades! Hope you are well and negotiating the creep towards ‘normal’, whatever that might be. Today’s question is can a 31-minute podcast hosted by some bloke who always sounds half-asleep brighten your day. Don’t answer yet! First, sit on the front step with this selection of ice under sun, deep sea bioluminescence, neon green wristbands and ectoplasm to think it through.

Hello comrades!
Well, I have to say I was touched by the messages of support welcoming back this little project, so heartfelt thanks for all that. In response I am committing to continuing the show, even if the schedule has to be erratic. This episode features scouring punk, feet confounding bass and skitter, furious noise, twanging gurglecore, skeletal meta-pop and the kind of all-encompassing magnificence that makes my day. All packed into an efficient 28 minutes – so short that even those working from home can listen on their commute.

Hello comrades! Long time, no see, eh? We all know the reasons why, so I won’t get into it here. Suffice to say that I hope – wholeheartedly – that your year has been as painless as could be hoped for in the circumstances. If you’ve been struggling, then I’m very sorry to hear it. You’re not alone, friend, and I hope this modest podcast provides a moment of relief or distraction.
Some housekeeping: I do intend to produce these again on a semi-regular basis, but I am not sure what the schedule will be. I recommend being pleasantly surprised whenever one of these drops and not thumbing ‘refresh’ on your podcast app. I’m also keeping the floodgate marked ‘submissions requested’ firmly closed. I am amazed and grateful for the generosity people show – providing download codes and the like – but if you send stuff, I’ll likely put it to one side until I have the mental strength not to get burnt out by obligation. Everyone in any DIY scene knows how that goes…
OK, that’s the business end dealt with. Let’s have a little dance, shall we? Tracks played, please support the artists:
