ff013 neil campbell – the hearing force of the humanverse
- calder rising blending neverending
- roadside shimmering oxide
- morse flowers
- palace bathroom floor
- DEAD CAGE
- puffed dirt shredded wood
- panic skrike
- diesel kingdom
…and whilst I’m on about Neil, here’s another dusty classic rescued from the FFR Heritage Archive basement grimoire store. The spec: Neil’s second solo venture for ffr comprises 9 tracks originally segued together into one 34 minute piece. The various bits were created between 1998 and 2001 and, for the record, DEAD CAGE was adapted from a composition by long time collaborator Stewart Walden. The title is a dreadful pun on ‘Music is the Healing Force of the Universe’ by Albert Ayler. Yeah, I know – but what can you do?
Anyway, the music is a mixture of Vibracathedral-style drone-rituals interleaved with scribbled sketches, all of which have been phased, phlanged and philtered into expressions of Neil’s inimitable groove. Voice, bells, strings, short-wave radio all feature making this a relatively ‘semi-acoustic’ business. Very much a pre-Astral Social Club, pre-Kaossilator, pre-lapsarian region of the Campbell discography. Lovely.
